Notting Hill
Plasterers in Notting Hill
Stucco terraces and garden squares, most of it listed and most of it flats.
Stucco, squares and listing
Notting Hill is mid nineteenth century stucco fronted terrace around communal garden squares, built to a pattern and largely intact. Tall rooms on the lower floors, solid walls, lath and plaster ceilings and cornice that is original far more often than not.
A great deal of it is listed and effectively all of it sits in a conservation area, which covers the inside as well as the front elevation.
Repair rather than replace
Listing pushes the work firmly towards repair. Matching a profile and running a new section into an existing one, overboarding a failing ceiling up to the cornice rather than through it, and leaving alone what is sound.
Most of these houses are now flats, so a job is usually one floor of a larger building. Room heights change as you go up and so does the cornice, which matters when a run has to be matched.
Access in Kensington and Chelsea
There is no off street parking to speak of and the borough controls the kerb tightly. Materials arrive in planned drops and a bay is suspended in advance where one is needed.
Because the houses are almost all divided, the shared staircase is the route for everything. It gets protected and cleaned down at the end of each day.
