A stud partition is the usual way of splitting a room, closing off a hallway or making an en suite, and it is a fast job when it is set out properly and an expensive one when it is not.

Almost everything that goes wrong with a partition was decided before the first board went on: where the door swings, where the sockets land, whether there is anything solid behind the plasterboard to hang a radiator or a TV from.

The frame goes up against the finished floor level and the finished ceiling, not the existing ones, or the new wall ends up out of plumb against a room that is already out of true.

Doorways, service voids, socket positions and noggins for anything heavy all get decided at this stage, because every one of them is buried the moment the board goes on.

Timber or metal, and insulation

Timber stud is quicker in a small domestic partition and takes a fixing anywhere. Metal stud is straighter, does not move with moisture and is what most commercial work uses.

Acoustic insulation in the void makes a real difference in a partition between a bedroom and a hallway, and it costs very little at this stage. Afterwards it means taking a side of board off.

A new partition is finished to match what is already in the room. In a house that means a full skim over the board so it reads as the same surface as the walls either side.

In a flat finished with tape and joint it means matching that instead, because a skimmed wall next to taped board takes paint differently and shows under a side light.

How long does a stud wall take?

A straightforward partition is usually a day to frame and board, then the finish on top of that. A doorway, services or insulation in the void all add to it.

Can I hang a TV on it?

Yes, if there is something behind the board to fix to. Say where it is going before boarding starts and a timber noggin goes in at that height. Fixing into board alone will not hold a heavy bracket.

Timber or metal stud?

Timber is quicker in a small domestic partition and takes a fixing anywhere along it. Metal is straighter, does not move with moisture and is standard on commercial work. Either is fine in a house.

Will it feel solid?

It will sound hollow, because there is a void behind it. That is normal rather than a fault. Insulation in the void makes it noticeably less hollow and cuts sound through it.

Can you put insulation in it?

Yes, and it is worth deciding before the frame is boarded. Acoustic insulation between a bedroom and a hallway makes a real difference and costs very little at that stage.

Do you fit the door as well?

The opening is framed and lined ready for one. Hanging the door itself is a joiner's job, and the frame is set out to the door you have chosen rather than a standard size.

Skim or tape and joint?

Whatever the rest of the room is. A skimmed wall beside taped board takes paint differently and it shows under a side light, so the new wall matches the old ones.

Can you do it in a flat?

Yes. In a converted or purpose built flat the lease usually sets working hours and the board has to fit the lift or the staircase, so that gets worked out before a date.
