Plasterers in Southfields
The grid, mostly family houses, and plasterwork worth keeping.
The Southfields grid
Southfields is one of the more intact Edwardian grids in south west London, built in the first decade of the twentieth century and largely still in single family use. Bay fronts, generous ceiling heights and original cornice in a lot of the front rooms.
That changes the default. Where detail survives it is generally worth keeping, so the job gets planned around the cornice rather than through it, and skimming is run up to it cleanly rather than over it.
Bays, and why they take longer
A bay window has more angles in it than the rest of the room put together, and both the coving and the skim have to hold a line around all of them.
Getting a bay to read as one continuous surface is slower than the square end of the same room, and it is the part of the job where the difference between a good and an average finish is visible from the street.
Practicalities
Parking is controlled and the grid fills up during the day. Deliveries get timed and broken down rather than dropped in one load.
Most of these houses have no side access worth the name, so materials and waste go through the house and the route stays sheeted for the length of the job.
